Ash Wednesday and Sunday Masses at the Oratory
Just a reminder that tonight, as usual, High Mass will be offered at 7.30pm at the Birmingham Oratory for Ash Wednesday, replacing the usual 5.45pm low Mass. Please note that from Sunday, there will be an additional Mass in the Extraordinary Form at 7.30am in addition to the High Mass at 10.30am: this replaces the 10.30am low Mass in the Upper Cloister Hall that was introduced as an overflow Mass when church services resumed after the first lockdown.

New Year's Masses
New Year's Day falls on a Friday this year, which has a few implications for the celebration of the EF in the area:
1) The first Friday Mass Acocks Green will NOT take place
2) The usual 6.30pm Friday Mass at Our Lady of Perpetual Succour in Wolverhampton has been moved to 7pm on Christmas Eve. This was announced at late notice and does not appear in the church newsletter published over the weekend.
3) There will be a High Mass at 12 noon at the Birmingham Oratory, replacing the usual Octave 9am Mass.
I wish you all a Happy and Holy New Year.

St Dunstan's Third Friday Mass Resumes
You may remember that one of the last Masses in Birmingham before the public celebration of Mass was suspended was at St Dunstan's with an EF Mass being celebrated on the main altar for the first time in its history. A new altar containing a relic of St John Henry Newman, kindly donated by the Birmingham Oratory, has been installed during lockdown and this will be the first EF Mass celebrated using it. Directions are available in the sidebar. If you do turn up tomorrow I can assure you that the sanctuary will be laid out like this:

The Resumption of the Public Celebration of Mass
These are currently the only EF Masses that I have been made aware will resume; I will announce the resumption of further Masses as and when the details become available with an announcement on this blog and will add them to the calendar in the sidebar. Please note you must bring a face covering to be admitted to these Masses (although face masks can be bought for a pound at Wolverhampton should you turn up and discover you have forgotten your own).
As a result of the resumption of the celebration of public Masses, the Oratory is no longer live streaming its Masses although Our Lady of Perpetual Succour will continue to live stream the Friday Mass on its Youtube channel. The obligation to attend Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation remains suspended.
Below is the final live streamed low Mass celebrated at the Oratory on 4th July 2020.

Just to remind you, the Oratory are live streaming their masses on their YouTube channel every day at 9am. You can access the channel at the following link:

Unfortunately, the Missa Cantata they celebrated this morning has not been uploaded at the time of writing, but if you check the link later in the day it should be available.

The Cessation of the Public Celebration of Mass
One of the last Masses to be celebrated in Birmingham was the 7pm Mass at St Dunstan's in Kings Heath, the church at which I was baptised, confirmed, had my first confession and received my first Holy Communion and where my parents were married. As it happened, it coincided with the third Friday of the month which is the only day Mass is celebrated publicly in the Extraordinary Form at the church (the exception perhaps being All Souls Day). It was a Missa Cantata and for the first time ever it was celebrated on the main altar of the church, rather than the Lady Altar: the church was built after the reforms and had its sanctuary reordered earlier this year. The picture of the church in the sidebar shows the layout of the altar prior to the reordering - the altar has now moved to a central position.
While we are unable to attend Mass and receive Communion, the Birmingham Oratory is streaming Mass in the Extraordinary Form every day at 9am. Please visit and perhaps subscribe to the channel here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCCd9cGbxpbLzjxqSsmiyznw
Here is a recording of the Mass from last Sunday:
I will keep you all in my prayers and I ask that you keep me in yours.
